Chapter 15

The sun set early in October, and by nine the silver stars looked magnificent in the black sky…but a far cry from the ebony stars in the scarlet sky that haunted my dreams.

Addison let me wear his flight jacket to keep that autumn chill at bay. I didn’t want to look too eager, so I reluctantly accepted the jacket and secretly breathed in its rich leather scent. Before sliding my arms through the long sleeves, the silk lining on the jacket’s inside caught my eye. It was imprinted with a map of northeastern France.

“It was for the pilots,” he explained. “If we…um…if they were shot down, they would at least have an idea of where they were and where they needed to be.”

I sat sideways in the passenger’s seat, admiring Addison’s handsome and crisp profile, illuminated by the dashboard lights. After a day full of driving, I thought it only fitting to allow Addison to drive his own car. And as much as I loved driving—a stick, of all things—there was just something soothing about being driven around by a truly breathtaking man.

“Can I ask you another question?” I pulled his jacket close around me.

His lips spread into a sly smile. “You sure are full of questions. Does it have to do with heart-stopping machines, or closets, or my irregular heartbeat?”

“It has to do with us.” It was far easier for me to concentrate when he kept his eyes on the road and not on me. “What happens tomorrow? Today’s been like a dream, and when you wake up from some dreams you forget them.”

“I will never forget today.” The shadows in his face couldn’t hide his half smile. “But tomorrow? You have no idea how afraid I am that I will hurt you.”

“Is it because you are going to leave?”

“That’s part of it. But there is more. So much more.”

“Like what?” I saw him build that wall between us again.

He laughed at his hopeless situation. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“I understand you better than you think.” I understood he was torn between wanting me and not wanting me.

We rode in silence for several more miles until Cemetery Lane came into view. He turned onto our street, and I noticed a strange vehicle in the driveway. It was the sheriff’s new patrol car angled in the driveway. A strange sinking feeling filled my stomach.

Addison parked on the street and walked me to the door. Professor Jarrod lay on the porch swing, snoring his goat snores. He didn’t even stir when we opened the creaking door and stepped inside. For one fleeting moment, I wondered if the sheriff’s visit had been brought on by another vicious goat attack.

Grams met us in the doorway, escorting Sheriff Hannaford out. Worry lines creased her ashen face and dark circles ringed her eyes. “Thank you, Officer Hendrix,” she solemnly said. “I hope the rest of your evening is quiet.”

The sheriff deposited his notepad into his shirt pocket and zipped his jacket. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Flowers.” He tilted his square jaw down sympathetically.
